Baptist Hospital East Radiation Center
Baptist Hospital East Radiation Center in Louisville, Kentucky, provides Novalis Shaped Beam Stereotactic Radiosurgery. This non-invasive radiation treatment is optimal for eradicating tumor tissue without disturbing adjacent healthy tissues. While radiosurgery is not painful it does require that patients remain still for 30 to 45 minutes. And, like any sort of medical procedure, patients may experience elevated levels of anxiety and stress.
Biophilic elements – natural daylight and views to nature – in healthcare settings have been shown to significantly reduce stress and anxiety. The exquisite realism of the Luminous SkyCeiling above the radiosurgery machine brings the relaxing influence of a beautiful day to patients' awareness. Whether looking directly at it from a supine position, or sensing it peripherally, the Luminous SkyCeiling engages our instinctive attraction to nature (biophilia) and the soothing benefits that brings.
The unique configuration of this Luminous SkyCeiling enhances the illusion that it is a real skylight. The overall sky composition was designed for an 8' x 10' SkyCeiling. But, in the final design the cruciform section in the middle was removed to accommodate the overhead lighting and other ceiling mounted equipment. When viewing this kind of configuration, where parts of the image are missing, our mind's eye tends to fill in the blanks so that we sense the continuity of the sky image as we would the real sky around an actual skylight. This simple design choice amplifies the SkyCeiling's illusion of nature potential to trigger genuine relaxation responses.
