Gensler Concept Room
NeoCon West and Interior Design magazine teamed up to present the WestEdge show and competition during L.A. Design Week 2006. This year, the world-renowned design firm Gensler was among six firms chosen to create "concept rooms" based on different environmental themes. Gensler's theme was hospitality, and they, in turn, chose six manufacturers to work with on the room. The Sky Factory was asked to supply the ceiling lighting installation.
Dealing with the secondary theme of homelessness, the space contrasted the luxury of a beautiful contemporary lounge with images of homelessness surrounding the space in a shadowy region behind glass walls. Visitors were reminded that their affluent lives of luxury in L.A. are bordered by the poverty of nearly 100,000 homeless. The Sky Factory contributed a unique 6'x18' Programmable Luminous SkyCeiling™. Photographic images of a cloud-filled sky hovered over the lounge space, changing end-to-end from tawny orange to shades of deep blue over a slow, 4-minute cycle. The color change was accomplished with a bi-color array of fluorescent lighting controlled by a Digitally Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI). This package, available as a custom feature for all fluorescent-based Luminous SkyCeilings, allows a huge variety of lighting effects to be programmed into the ceiling.
